Sit quietly for 5 minutes before taking your reading. Keep your arm at heart level. Do not smoke, exercise, or drink caffeine 30 minutes before. Take two or three readings and use the average.
If your blood pressure is above 180/120 AND you have chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness, vision changes, or severe headache — call 911 immediately. This is a hypertensive crisis.
